Greetings, everyone.

I want to take the space this month to tell you about our latest Business After Hours held this past Wednesday at People’s United Bank.  We enjoyed a presentation by Sage Payroll Group about the importance of having an up-to-date and accurate employee manual.  For any business with an employee, the recommendation is that you put one together and review it annually for accuracy and updates.

An employee manual should inform, orient, and help retain employees.  It also can help protect the business if policies and procedures are written down and employees sign saying they have read the policy and understand what it says.

Some of the elements of a good handbook will include clear, consistent expectations about basic workplace behavior (when to show up at work, what to wear, etc.), use of devices like cell phones and company computers, and how to treat customers and fellow staff.  It might include information about annual reviews, harassment policies, emergency procedures, vehicle policies, and benefits information.   

The Sage folks (Kevin and Kevin) can provide training on this topic – if you’d be interested in attending a workshop on this topic, let us know and we’ll set it up for our upcoming fall/winter workshop series.  We’d love to hear ideas for other topics you’d like to see covered -- Just send us an email and let us know!

Our primary service is transportation to and from the airports of New England and NYC.  We can pick you up based on your schedule so you are not driven around in a van as the driver picks up other passengers along the way, in most cases making you leave your home much earlier than necessary to catch a flight.  

When you arrive at the airport on your return trip we are already there waiting for you.  You can call us at the cell phone lot directly after you have gathered your luggage and we will be at the passenger pick-up area within 5 minutes.  

There is also the benefit of additional personal safety by using DC & SS. If you should be returning from a long international flight and landing at Logan International for example, driving another two and a half hours to our area possibly in the dark can be very tiring and potentially dangerous, especially for folks that cannot sleep on planes.

The Bridge of Flowers Classic Races is partnering with five local charities to give back to their community.  The Races, to be held on Saturday, August 12th in Shelburne Falls, MA, will work the following charities to fundraise and raise awareness of their causes:  The Academy of Charlemont - Charlemont; The Art Garden – Shelburne Falls; Cancer Connection -  Northampton; Dial/Self of Franklin County; and Friends of Children – Hadley.  In addition, the charities will receive a portion of the net proceeds from the event and use the race’s resources to collect pledges and develop volunteers.  The race’s 10K Classic and the Steve Lewis Subaru 3K Charity Run/Walk attract over 1,000 runners and over 3,000 people total to Shelburne Falls for the day.

“The Bridge of Flowers Races has a tradition of working with several charities over the years,” said Carole Appleton, 2017 Race Director.  “It is a win-win for both, as the charity can fundraise without the stress of putting an event together and the race gets additional volunteers to assist with the community event.”

The Bridge of Flowers 10K Classic/Steve Lewis Subaru 3K Charity Run/Walk started in 1978, under the direction of Mike McCusker. The race has had thousands of participants run through the Shelburne Falls, MA village center, crossing the historic 1890 Iron Bridge, and racing through the neighborhood streets. The race provides Franklin County hospitality with a Spaghetti Fest dinner the evening before the race and a post-race party for participants and volunteers.

Thank you to those who have reached out to me so far for help. I love this program because it gives me more opportunity to connect with you all. 

Recently, a member came to me with questions about his Facebook. As many of you have probably noticed, Facebook is an ever-changing platform. I often find that the layout has changed or buttons have moved around.

He said he used to have a newsfeed for his personal profile and a separate one for his business page, but the business page newsfeed disappeared. We were able to locate his business page's newsfeed (see pictures below).

I am sharing this with all of you in case you didn't know about this feature. On your business Page's Feed, you'll find posts and updates from only the pages that you "like as your page" (see instructions below for how to "like" another page as your page). This is a helpful feature because you can follow only pages that are relevant to your business so that you can share other pages' content, stay informed to competing or related businesses, or just to not have to sift through all the pictures of kittens that probably pop up on your personal newsfeed.

Fine Art Soft Pastel Workshop

If you're fascinated with vibrant color and line work, and want to carve out a few hours to work with a new medium, Becky will introduce you to the immediate gratification of pastel. These classes allow you to experiment while building skill and confidence in your handling of the medium. For beginners and those with drawing experience, each session will include drawing exercises and opportunities to create finished artworks and offers an open environment of sharing knowledge and posing questions with individual attention. In a very short time span we touch on some of the most important aspects of mastering pastels. You may sign up for one, or both. If you sign up for both, the second session will hone in on already acquired skills from the first session.

The Shelburne Falls Trolley Museum will be celebrating “TROLLEYFEST” on Saturday, July 22 at the Trolley Museum in Shelburne Falls from 11am until 5pm.

This is the annual celebration of the restoration of Trolley No. 10, which was delivered to the Shelburne Falls and Colrain Street Railway Company in 1896. The Trolley, which is celebrating its 121st birthday this year, was built by the Wason Manufacturing Company of Springfield, Ma. and was considered as state-of-the-art at the time, having both lights and electric heaters. This Trolley, which served its namesake towns of Shelburne Falls and Colrain for 30 years until 1928, has never left this valley and spent 20 years of its life crossing the Deerfield River on the bridge now known throughout the world as the “Bridge Of Flowers”.

After the Trolley Company failed in 1928, Trolley No. 10 was saved by the Johnson family of Colrain. It served various uses over the next 65 years and was then donated to the museum in 1992. After a complete restoration, No. 10 was returned to operation on October 9, 1999 amid a gala festival to honor the trolley, its donor, and the many volunteers and professional people who helped to make an impossible dream a reality.

Visitors this year will be able to ride not only Trolley No. 10 and the pump car, both of which are available any time the museum is open, but will also be able to ride the caboose, which will be powered by a trackmobile, and also a Speeder, often referred to as a Motorcar or Putt-Putt. There will also be Velocipede demonstrations.

Wooden and electric trains will be available for the youngsters.  At 1:15, there will be a reading by the author of “The Little Yellow Trolley Car”. There will be music during the afternoon by the Whistlestop Players, and reenactments of trolley riders from 1910.

There will be hands-on demonstrations of Apple Cider Making and Butter Making and sampling of both.

Copper polishing and weaving on adult and child friendly looms will be available. Also, foundry demonstrations of poured aluminum using traditional sand casting techniques, and games from 1900. A large Railroad Paraphernalia tag sale will continue throughout the day along with the Trolleyfest Raffle. 

New this year will be the availability of old time sandwiches and pie, as well as Maple Products from Davenport Maple Farm.

The public is invited to share in the activities.  All-Day Adult passes are $4.00 and Youth passes are only $2.00 with children under 6 being admitted free.

 The Shelburne Falls Trolley Museum has kicked off its annual “Trolleyfest” Raffle for 2017.  The museum, which is fully staffed by volunteers is hoping for a large participation in this year’s raffle to provide funds for its continuing operation and growth.  The museum operates Saturdays and Sundays, 11 am until 5 pm from Memorial Day until the end of October, and also on Mondays, 1pm until 5pm during July and August.   Local history comes alive for visitors as they ride the restored 1896 trolley car which once ran across the historic Bridge of Flowers.  The pump car and the caboose are also big attractions at the museum as well as the kid’s corner with its wooden and electric trains.  

This year’s raffle is featuring gift certificates to local businesses such as Green Fields Market/McCuskers Market, and local eateries including the West End Pub in Shelburne Falls and 90 Main Eatery in Charlemont. Copies of Cliff Schexnayder’s book, “Builder’s of the Hoosac Tunnel” are also being awarded.  To help everyone with their summer plans, the museum has also obtained a number of gift certificates to many other trolley and railroad museums in New England such as Hoosac Berkshire Valley Train Rides in North Adams, Shore Line Trolley Museum and Essex Steam Train and Riverboat, both in CT, and Seashore Trolley Boothbay Railway Village, located in Maine.  

Tickets are available at the museum during normal operating hours and priced at only $5 for a single ticket, or 3/$10 or 8/$20.  Anyone wishing to print their own tickets may do so by visiting www.sftm.org.  You may print your tickets and mail them with your check.  Also, visit the web site to see updates as more prizes become available, and also for details on the prizes being awarded.

Raffle prizes will be drawn at the close of the “Trolleyfest” celebration on July 22.  You need not be present in order to win.  Winners will be called and certificates may be picked up at the museum.

The museum wishes to express its “Thanks” to all the merchants and other museums who have contributed goods and certificates to make this a successful venture.

With the closing of the Buckland Rec pool, the Ashfield Park Commission has generously offered to allow Buckland residents and pool members the opportunity to purchase a membership to Ashfield Lake for the summer. The lake has a sandy beach, a dock, and lifeguards on duty from 12-6 on weekdays and 10-6 on weekends. The facility also has a bath house with toilets and changing rooms, 2 tennis courts, swings and a picnic area. The lake opens on Memorial Day weekend and closes after Labor Day weekend. Cost of the membership is $100 for a family and $50 for individuals. To purchase a membership, bring a check made out to the Town of Ashfield-Park Commission to Sherry at the Buckland Town Hall.

Join us for "The Cuckoo Clock Master's Apprentice," an original, site-specific theater performance with both puppets and human actors. Staged at the Art Garden in Shelburne Falls, "The Cuckoo Clock Master's Apprentice" tells a coming-of-age story within a parallel, magical reality. The audience follows the main character, Compass Rose, through the performance space as they leave the security of their hidden home, only to discover a world bent on erasing the history of their people. A talkback will follow.$5-15 sliding scale at the door. No one turned away for lack of funds.

Molly Cantor Pottery, Shelburne Falls Yoga and The Art Garden collaborate to offer morning clay, midday movement, and mixed media art-making in the afternoons.In this popular mixed-age program, children learn skills, get lots of exercise and explore their own creative ideas in fun and non-judgmental studio environments.   Children are escorted to each studio and eat their bag lunches at The Art Garden.     The Franklin County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors is excited to announce that Natalie Blais will become its next Executive Director. 

    As the former Economic Development Specialist and Communications Director for Representatives John Olver and Jim McGovern, Natalie has dedicated much of her career advocating for the needs of Franklin County.  She is well known by local businesses, farmers, organizations and citizens and is highly respected by legislators and policy leaders at the local, state and national levels. Natalie lives in and understands the needs of Franklin County, has a firm understanding of economic development, and has a strong vision for the future of both the region and the Chamber.  

     Board Chair Linda Dunlavy stated, "The Board was well aware that filling the shoes of retired Ann Hamilton would be difficult.  We were blessed and also challenged by several strong, local candidates that made the decision very difficult but we were so impressed by Natalie, her experience and her vision that we are very confident and almost giddy with this decision!"  

     Upon accepting the position, Natalie said, "Having advocated on behalf of the residents of Franklin County for a decade, I am honored to have been chosen to lead the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce.      Natalie will be introduced to the Chamber members and the community at the June 23rd Chamber Breakfast and at Meet and Greet events that will be scheduled later in the summer.  Natalie will begin at the Chamber in August after wrapping up her current responsibilities as Chief of Staff to the Chancellor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Gymnastics Camps (ages 4-14) – The Y has a top-notch gymnastics center including a foam blocks pit for save learning and fun.  There are eight weeks of gymnastics camps with full days from 9am-4pm and half days from 9am-1pm or 12pm-4pm.  Adding early care (6:15-9am) and/or late care (4-6pm) makes summer childcare easy for parents.  The center has air conditioning and small camper to staff ratios.  The camps run from June 26-August 18.  See ymcaingreenfield.org for details or call 773-364 ext. 0.

Summer Memberships – The YMCA has summer memberships for people who are home for the summer or who just want to try the Y.  The memberships include use of the basketball court, lap pool, Jacuzzi, weight room, cardio machine center, over 60 group exercise classes per week including yoga, Barre and Zumba, free instruction, family swims, family fun nights and more.  The memberships are valid until September 3.  There are high school, adult, senior and family prices starting at $49.  Call 773-3646 ext. 0 for details.

Early & Late Childcare – The Y’s three summer camps (two indoor and one outdoor) run from 9am-4pm but early care (6:15-9am) and late care (4-6pm) are available at the YMCA and Camp Apex to make summer childcare easy for parents.  Early care has free breakfast and all camps have free lunch as well.  West County parents can drop off and pick up their children (ages 6-14) at Camp Apex, which is less than half a mile from Route 2.  See the camp brochure at ymcaingreenfield.org or call 773-3646 ext. 0.

Small Group Training - Starting June 19 a YMCA exercise trainer will be teaching small group fitness classes.  The classes will meet M/W/F for six weeks for 45-60 minutes with 4-6 people per group.  Groups include: Summer Conditioning For Fall Sports for ages 15-18 (two groups); Weight Loss for 14-18 year olds; Weight Loss for ages 19 and over; Adult Strength/Cardio/Flexibility for ages 50 and over (2 groups) and a women’s only group (ages 30-50).  Each group will meet at times convenient for the group members.  The fee is $199, which includes 18 small group sessions plus a Y summer membership valid now through September 3.  Call Jayne Trosin at 773-3646 ext. 448 for details and possible time slots.

Sports Camps – The Y offers eight weeks of a sports camp with a variety of sport themes for boys and girls ages 6-14.  The camp offers half day (9am-1pm or 1-4pm) and full day (9am-4pm).  Parents can add early care (6:15-9am) and/or late care (4-6pm) for a full day of childcare.  The camps staff create “like ability groups” so all levels will feel comfortable. There is a daily swim and game room play as well as a free lunch.  Our air-conditioned gym provides cool comfortable play. Camp Apex – 2017 is the 65th year Camp Apex staff have been building strong kids in mind, body and spirit.  Over the decades, the facility has been upgraded with a modern bathhouse, solar heated pool, tube slide, climbing wall, etc.  The programs have changed as well, such as a reading program to slow the summer learning gap; but still offers old time fun with archery, nature, playing in a small stream and more.  The camp runs ten weeks from June 19 through August 25 with early and late care available from 6:15-9 am and 4-6 pm right at the camp.  Boys and girls also get a free lunch.  For details see “camps” at ymcaingreenfield.org.

Deerfield, Mass. (June 6, 2017)---Celebrate summer by joining Historic Deerfield on Thursday evenings in July for three lectures devoted to rhythms of life of early America during these warmest months of the year. "Summer Living in Early America" will explore early community celebrations of the nation's most important civic holiday, dressing to beat the heat, and summer foodways.  The  lectures, which are free and open to the public, will take place on Thursday evenings, July 6, 13, and 20, at 7:30 p.m. at the Deerfield Community Center, 16 Memorial Street, Deerfield, Massachusetts.
