We're excited to announce the GSFABA has recently hired Shira Lander as our new Administrative Project Coordinator. Shira will be taking on much of the event coordination, member services, and special projects. Shira graduated from UMass Amherst’s Isenberg School of Management with a degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management. She became acquainted with the Greater Shelburne Falls Area through her employment at Zoar Outdoor in Charlemont, where she worked as a Canopy Tour Zipline Guide.
Before coming to the GSFABA, Shira was a marketing assistant at a plant rental/event planning company, a manager at Boating in Boston, and the Assistant Aquatics Director at the Hampshire Regional YMCA. Her passions include food, music, and outdoor activities.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this hearing is to provide the public with the opportunity to become fully acquainted with the proposed Route 2 @ Colrain-Shelburne Road Intersection Improvement project. All views and comments made at the hearing will be reviewed and considered to the maximum extent.
PROPOSAL: The proposed project consists of improving the intersection of Route 2 and Colrain-Shelburne Road to enhance vehicular sight distance and add safety measures to the intersection. The work includes roadway and shoulder grading and embankment, mixed asphalt paving, pavement markings and signage, guardrail removals and rehabilitation, tree removals, installation of drainage piping, replication of impacted stream bank and wetland area, loaming, seeding and other incidental items of work. Bicycle accommodations consisting of a usable shoulder have been provided in accordance with applicable design guides.
A secure right-of-way is necessary for this project. Acquisitions in fee and permanent or temporary easements may be required. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is responsible for acquiring all needed rights in private or public lands. MassDOT’s policy concerning land acquisitions will be discussed at this hearing.
Written views received by MassDOT subsequent to the date of this notice and up to five (5) days prior to the date of the hearing shall be displayed for public inspection and copying at the time and date listed above. Plans will be on display one-half hour before the hearing begins, with an engineer in attendance to answer questions regarding this project. The Town of Montague (MA) and Turners Falls RiverCulture are requesting proposals for a public sculpture to be installed in the new pedestrian park on the corner of Avenue A and 3rd Street (green triangle above). SmartAsset, a New York financial technology company, recently released their second annual study on the Best Places to Get a Mortgage. The study determines the top markets by comparing the likelihood of mortgage approval by county, in addition to mortgage rates, average five-year borrowing costs, and property taxes. Franklin County cracked the list at number 3 in Massachusetts, up from their rank of 10 in 2015.
The Shelburne Falls Compost Collaborative (SFCC) has been successfully operating for almost six years! We are composting over 150 cubic yards of material each year; all saved from the landfill and instead made into compost.
SFCC is expanding; please join us! Shelburne Falls Compost Collaborative is a true community effort, currently supported by: Hearty Eats, Mocha Maya’s, Mo's Fudge Factor, The Blue Rock Restaurant, Vävstuga Weaving School, and West End Pub. The program was launched in 2010 by The Greater Shelburne Falls Area Business Association (GSFABA), Franklin County Solid Waste Management District (FCSWMD), and ECS, Inc. In 2012 the Bridge of Flowers gardeners joined SFCC free of charge. Mirick Insurance adds shredded paper. The Town of Shelburne hosts the compost dumpster in a town parking lot; an additional dumpster on the Buckland side is in the planning stages.
SFCC participants share a “commercial compost” dumpster for food and paper waste. The dumpster is emptied once a week by a compost hauler that is already in town to service McCusker’s Market. The materials are taken to Martin’s Farm Compost and Mulch in Greenfield, where they are transformed into nutrient-rich compost.
Because the material is processed at an on-farm facility, a wide range of organically-based wastes can be composted. ALL food waste, including items not recommended for home composting such as meat, poultry, bones, dairy, fats and oily foods, can be composted at a commercial composting facility – no sorting! All paper wastes are acceptable, such as paper napkins, paper towels, paper cups, plates and waxed cardboard, (items that are not recyclable and usually destined for the trash.) Also accepted: plant waste, shredded paper, compostable plastics, and small pieces of wood.
60-80% of a restaurant’s solid waste is food, according to the EPA. Paul St. Martin of the West End Pub said that for the last five years his restaurant has been able to compost by “keeping separate bins and having employees put plate scrapings and food in one and all the non-compostable items in the other. The best part is we cut our trash in half.”
Cost: The total cost of the dumpster is $82.50/month in winter and $138/month in summer. Businesses split those costs according to their estimated volumes; members are asked to measure volumes when they join and again every year or two. FCSWMD invoices businesses quarterly; a $10 administrative fee per business per year is charged.
Schedule: From June-October, the dumpster is emptied every Wednesday morning; in the winter, every other Weds.
Training: FCSWMD provides a (voluntary) free training for your employees, customized to your business and scheduled at your convenience. Yes/No lists are provided to all participants.

On a frigid winter night 312 years ago more than 300 French soldiers, Canadians, and their Native allies launched a daring raid on the English settlement of Deerfield, Massachusetts. One hundred and twelve Deerfield men, women, and children were captured and taken on a 300-mile forced march to Canada. Many of the surviving captives were later redeemed and returned to Deerfield; others chose to remain among their French and Native captors. Historic Deerfield's 2016 Winter Lecture Series, "In Harm's Way: Conflict and Captivity before the French and Indian War," commemorates the 312th anniversary of the 1704 raid by exploring conflicts, alliances and contested territories in the Northeast throughout the later 17th and early 18th centuries. Four scholars will introduce individual and cultural perspectives as well as larger geopolitical issues in play before the (final) French and Indian War, expanding our understandings of these fascinating and important places and events, their antecedents, and their powerful legacies.
The next lecture, "Raiding and Captive Taking along the New England and New York Borders 1688-1748," presented by Kevin Sweeney, Professor of American Studies and History, Amherst College, Amherst, Mass., will be presented on Sunday, February 28.

The Health Care Workforce Center (HCWC) and the State Office of Rural Health at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) announce federal HPSA designation for primary care (medical) in Buckland, Charlemont, Greenfield, Heath, Monroe, Montague, Rowe, and Shelburne effective September 30, 2015.
A HPSA designation by the federal Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA) provides incentives to certain providers who serve low income populations (where greater than 30% of residents have incomes at or below 200% of the federal poverty level). As this is a low-income designation, only those providers serving a low-income population are eligible for incentives.
Eligible providers may apply for loan repayment assistance under the Massachusetts Loan Repayment Program (MLRP) for health professionals, and for J1-visa waiver status (specific to foreign trained physicians). At this time this area is not competitive for National Health Service Corps (NHSC) awards because of this PC-HPSA’s low need score of 8.
